As you’ll see over and over again in this book, data crunching tools
are more effective in combination than they are on their own.
That said, you can do a lot of sophisticated data crunching using GUI tools
such as Microsoft Excel and OpenOffice Calc. Programmers (particularly
Linux geeks) may sneer, but many accountants can do more in five minutes
with Excel, Microsoft Access, and a little VB than most programmers
can do in half an hour with their favorite programming language. A GUI
is also a must when it comes time to display data to people—ASCII bar
charts just don’t cut it in the Twenty-First Century.

A very good sentance that needs to the thought of when choosing the tool for your work.
But do not forget that many repetitive tasts come more efficient by using a script.
And probably less

I downloaded the LiveCD image.

Here are some issues I encountered

• LiveCD boot stops at command line => need to enter startx manually
• LiveCD for XFCE (my old PC) does not start up at all.

I remember not to have had such a issue with the official Ubuntu CDs.

Nevertheless, the user experience in the finally booted LiveCD was nice.
much more appealing
targeted towards productivity.

Specifically, I liked these modifications:

• Better contrasts due to a very professional artwork
• No more Evolution as default email program
• More screen space with 1 bottom panel only.
  I’d like to see these modifications:
  • a smart workspace switcher not taking a lot of screen space
  • not Tomboy as default (many of us use Tiddlywiki or a Webapp for this)
  • mintMenu cannot start with Windows key (SuperL)

Here is what I did to get the look and feel on my Jaunty:

3. Export the pannel settings from the live CD: gconftool-2 –dump /apps/panel > mintpanel.xml
4. Log in my Ubuntu install and adjust the panel: gconftool-2 –load mintpanel.xml
5. Change the Theme to the Shiki-Thingy.

What is still missing:

• Nautilus integration like mintUpload
• How can I get my Nautilus bookmarks into mintMenu?

Let’s see how this turns out.

I use it since about 1.5 years.

It has a good windows interface. Works on any OS and has very minimal requirements on the server setup. Big plus.

But some things are still bothering me:

• cannot get branches from Launchpad behind a proxy: bzr launchpad does not handle proxy when used for name resolution
• connection error on my FTP: want an option to set the output encoding, especially on win32
• encoding problem when saving logs on windows: want an option to set the output encoding, especially on win32

Besides these, it’s documentation isn very good and understandable for non-programmers.
I version program code, text documents, academia stuff.
And still do not harness all its power.
